La Prova Lagrein 2013

La Prova Lagrein 2013

Full flavoured yet medium bodied, black and blue berries, with an earthy, mineral quality which gives it vibrancy and makes it very moorish.

Lagrein is a north-eastern Italian grape variety native to Trentino-Alto Adige. Think mountains and valleys, so it likes elevation and warmth right? Enter a single vineyard at Mt Crawford, with 450m elevation in the southern Barossa.

Lagrein has this wickedly dense colour that stains everything it touches - hands, feet, teeth, clothes, concrete… so I am mesmerized even before I get to smell or taste. I also think Lagrein is a bit of an Italian anomaly, where the wine is more fruitful than savoury, yet has a brooding rustic charm.

The grapes were de-stemmed to an open fermenter for gentle handling on skins until pressing six weeks later. Matured in old French oak.

Bottled February 2014.
